The Mechanical Designer is an essential, valued member of the Building Engineering Services (BES) design staff directly responsible for creating a major portion of our product deliverables. This individual must be self-motivated, creative, and innovative. The ability to work as part of a collaborative team across multiple time zones is a must. This is a professional position with expanding responsibility and growth potential. The Mechanical Designer works as part of a collaborative, nationwide team creating system designs that enhance the working environments of our clients.

The Mechanical Designer reports to the area Mechanical and Plumbing Section Manager.

Preferred Qualifications

Academic / Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and minimum 3 experience designing and drafting HVAC and plumbing systems

OR:

  • 8 plus years' experience designing building mechanical systems
Technical
  • Proficient in Revit and AutoCAD
  • Command of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work independently and also as part of a collaborative team
Preferred Skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills in order to effectively work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Exceptional level of accuracy and detail
  • Experience conducting field observations and shop drawing review
  • Familiarity with industrial service equipment (tanks, pumps, piping, air compressors & dryers, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of Trane Trace or similar load analysis software
  • Working knowledge of Newforma Project Center and ProjectWise Document Management Software
  • Working knowledge of Bluebeam Revu
Typical Work Tasks / Duties
  • Produce HVAC and plumbing layouts and system designs
  • Perform heating and cooling load calculations
  • Draft and design under direct supervision of Professional Engineer (P.E.)
  • Produce Industrial Service Equipment layouts and system designs, including process piping, fluid storage and distribution
  • Update Industrial Service Equipment libraries including Revit family creation & edits, specification updates, and equipment pricing updates
  • Attend internal and external project coordination meetings
  • Revise drawings and specifications in response to client comments
  • Construction field observation and shop drawing review
  • Other design / engineering tasks as assigned
  • Travel: Some travel to job sites or other HDR offices could be required. This would be communicated in advance to give adequate coordination time with project work/personal life
Professional Development
  • Active participation in industry organizations is encouraged. Participation in professional development seminars, courses, workshops, or conferences is encouraged and should be approved in advance of attendance.
  • Additional industry certifications are also encouraged (LEED AP, CDT, CEM, etc.). Shall maintain continuing education requirements for any certification or license.
Physical Requirements
  • General: Required to talk, hear, stand, walk, use hands handle or feel and reach with hands and arms
  • Tolerance: Able to sit or stand in front of computer or other equipment for long periods of time. Able to sustain attentive work on tedious or repetitive tasks
  • Vision: Close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Lift/Carry: Able to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds
  • Climb/Crawl: Able to climb ladder, crawl under typical work surfaces
  • Movement: Able to travel to and traverse uneven terrain, climb ladder and/or scaffolding, crawl under objects with less than 30 inch clearance
Required Qualifications
  • Technical degree or a combination of education and related industry experience
  • A minimum of 5 years related industry experience
  • Advanced skillset of 3D design software and document management infrastructure
  • Advanced skillset of 3D Coordination tool
  • Competency of Microsoft Office products and communication tools
  • Advanced understanding of engineering or architectural concepts
  • Knowledge of industry standards and practices, along with discipline codes and specifications
  • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail and organizational traits are essential
